Who, What, & Why?

Good morning, good afternoon, or goodnight! My name is Kale Brown, and I’m a freshman college student at Taylor University, a small, Christian, community-centered school, where I am pursuing a major in Business Management and a minor in Military Science, Innovation & Entrepreneurship, and Honors Guild. I’m active in campus life, being a member of the Student Senate, Honors, Honors Cabinet (which is essentially Student Senate, but for Honors), and Army ROTC. The ROTC program has become a big part of my life, as I have devoted a lot of time and energy to it. I have gone down to Fort Knox to participate in the “varsity sport” of ROTC: Ranger Challenge. Along with that, I noted before arriving at Taylor that it did not have a Color Guard—so I started one. We are committed to honoring the national flag in a ceremonial and, well, honorable fashion. I am the head of that. On top of this, I recently became the Public Affairs Officer (PAO) for Charlie Company (C Co), the group of cadets that comes from a combination of Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU) and Taylor. This means I am responsible for managing C Co’s Instagram page (by the way, you can follow us at charliecompanyrotc!) and posting content to keep those who are interested updated in our activities.

Reader’s Revelation is a blog where I will be summarizing books I’ve been reading, along with pulling out relevant themes and things I noticed. I will try to be doing this without relying on outside sources or summaries. I believe that this will help me enhance my reading comprehension, critical thinking skills, and reveal what a 19-year-old kid notices about some popular titles. Knowing who I am will help you, the reader, see any biases or opinions I may hold as I go through these reviews. As this will be what I see in the book, it is likely you personally may not agree—or even think that it sounds crazy. That is okay; we are allowed to hold separate opinions. The thoughts given here are my personal ones. These are not meant to be correct. They are meant to provide my insight and what I think. I am more than happy to hear what you may think in the comments below!

It may be nice to see younger people, generally associated with lethargy and dismissiveness, starting to take initiative and write a blog, but why am I doing it? Other than to share what I see? Well, as I said, this is a good way for me to improve my own skills when it comes to reading. It forces me to slow down and analyze the text at a deeper level. Having a blog where I write reviews on books also keeps me accountable to reading. I find accountability for such a hobby to be incredibly useful! There are so many books with so much wisdom that it is sad not to try and absorb as much of it as I can. Having something to hold me to my hobby will keep this wisdom flowing into my mind. Lastly—and honestly—part of my motivation is to display how I think, analyze, and reflect, as well as display my commitment to personal growth. I also hope this may give future employers insight to who I am and what I stand for, along with the initiation I’m willing to take to improve my knowledge and skills.

In conclusion, who knows how this is going to go? Maybe the road will be bumpy, maybe it’ll be a smooth ride? It’s a mystery to you as much as it is to me. But if you stay with Reader’s Revelation, it’s one we’ll uncover together.
